Day Five: Mean Green Smoothie

What a whirlwind of a day! I figured what better way to start the week than with a real nutrient kick from a crazy variety of fresh greens, most harvested from my friend Sue’s amazing organic vegetable garden. You can’t get better than that! Juicing greens is an incredible way to get a large variety of essential nutrients to aid in detoxification, chelation and alkalinizing the system. By juicing some of the more fibrous vegetables and adding whole (more delicate) ones, we add in the fiber to slow absorption and feed your friendly bacteria.

Mean Green Smoothie

Serves 2


4 kale leaves
A handful of coriander
2 celery stems
1 cup diced cucumber
2 green apples
1 lime
A knob of fresh ginger
1 small pineapple
1/2 avo
1 cup broccoli, alfalfa and sunflower sprouts
2 tablespoons tahini
Lots of ice

Juice kale, coriander, celery, cucumber, apples, lime and ginger. Add juice to a blender with the remaining ingredients and blend until smooth. Cheers to health!!!

Day Four: Spicy Pear & Chocolate Smoothie Bowl

I woke up to a crisp autumn morning here in the spectacular Garden Route and felt like having something light, yet warming for breakfast. I bought some juicy pears at the market yesterday which are begging to be eaten. Paired (the cheesy pun is totally intended) with raw chocolate, warming ginger & chili plus a whole lot of nourishing foods, this smoothie bowl is a real Sunday treat!

Spicy Pear & Chocolate Smoothie Bowl
Serves 2


1 pear
knob of fresh ginger
1 tablespoon raw cacao powder
a handful of alfalfa sprouts
1/2 cup macadamia nuts
4 dates (add more for sweetness if desired)
2 tablespoons oats
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 scoops Phytopro Thrive protein powder
Fresh chili to taste
1 cup almond milk

Blend all the ingredients until smooth. Top with oats, cacao nibs, goji berries, popped brown rice, cinnamon and macadamia nuts. Enjoy!

Day Three: Beautiful-in-Red Smoothie

I have been loving Saturdays a little more than usual lately. I usually join the local Park Run, then spend time indulging my culinary curiosity at our local market. Today I was drawn to all the magnificent red fruit and vegetables.
Red is full of energetic vibrancy and fruit and vegetables containing this pigment offer beneficial nutrients such as lycopene, quercitin, hesperidin, ellagic acid, vitamin A & C that have protective benefits against certain cancers, heart disease, and inflammation. Here’s todays delicious recipe made from ingredients I bought this morning at the farmers market. What a treat!

Beautiful-in-Red Smoothie

1 cup diced watermelon
A handful of raspberries
2 red radishes
1 leaf red radicchio
1 cup fresh pomegranate juice
1 tablespoon chia seeds
1 teaspoon organic beet powder (optional)*
Fresh red chili to taste
Lots of ice

Put all the ingredients into a blender and blend until smooth. Serve chilled with lots of ice.

*Beet powder is dehydrated beetroot and adds antioxidants as well as a beautiful colour to smoothies and desserts. It is available from most good health food stores.

Day Two: Sunshine-In-My-Pocket Smoothie

Rain, glorious rain!! We have been blessed with a day and night of much-needed rain here in Knysna, but this morning I wished for the warm rays of the sun. If sunshine had a taste, I reckon it would taste like this Sunshine-In-My-Pocket Smoothie. Yes, it is that good! Packed with the radiant nutrients of orange fruit and vegetables, this smoothie is a powerhouse of beta-carotene, zeaxanthin, vitamin A & C and Omegas to boost the immune system and improve eyesight with the added bonus of radiant skin and healthy hair. Give this recipe a try!

Sunshine-In-My-Pocket Smoothie Recipe

Serves 2


4 large carrots
1 lemon
2 oranges/grapefruit
1 knob fresh ginger
1 mango
A handful of Cape gooseberries
1/2 cup cashews
1 tablespoon golden flaxseed (or brown flaxseeds)
2 scoops Phytopro Thrive Protein powder
Ice as desired

Juice carrots, peeled lemon, oranges and ginger in a juicer. Add the fresh juice to a blender with the rest of the ingredients and blend until smooth.

NOTE: If you don’t have a juicer, reduce the amount of carrots to 2 and blend all ingredients until smooth. Add water if it is too thick. Enjoy!

Day One: Purple Power Smoothie

The colour purple. It has inspired movies, songs and even obsessions…I have a friend who literally has EVERYTHING purple. We even call her Purple Sue. I am a purple fan too, especially when it comes in the form of food! I feel like the natural world creates a purple carrot, purple kale, purple cabbage, blueberries and even purple cauliflower to keep us in awe. Yes, nature is incredible.

The purple/blue pigment in fruit and vegetables has health-giving benefits thanks to phytonutrients (plant nutrients) like anthocyanins, resveratrol and hydroxicinnamic acid. They reduce inflammation, boost cognitive function, keep the heart healthy and have anti-cancer properties. Not a shabby resume!

Try this Purple Power Smoothie Recipe;

Serves 2


4 purple carrots
2 medium beetroot
2 purple cabbage leaves
1 cup black grapes
1 lime/lemon
2 apples
A thumb-sized piece of fresh ginger
A handful of sunflower sprouts
2 tablespoons activated buckwheat
1 tablespoon flaxseed oil
Ice as desired


Using a juicer, juice fruit, vegetables and ginger. To a blender, add sprouts, buckwheat, flaxseed oil and the freshly pressed juice. Blend until smooth and add ice. Enjoy immediately to benefit for all the nutritious ingredients.
